The Vancouver Regional Construction Association (VRCA) has announced the Gold winners for the its 24th annual Awards of Excellence.

The Vancouver Regional Construction Association (VRCA) has announced the Gold winners for the its 24th annual Awards of Excellence.

“The Gold Award winners are truly leaders in the industry and great examples of world class projects around the province built by VRCA members,” said Keith Sashaw, association president.

“We are very proud to celebrate the exceptional growth of our industry over the last 24 years.”

This year, 267 entrants and 67 projects were entered into the competition, which represent more than $2 billion in construction in the province.

“The value and excellence of this year’s entries reflect the outstanding quality of work done by VRCA members,” said Sashaw.

The Landmark Award was presented to PCL Constructors Westcoast Inc. for their work on the BC Place roof replacement and facilities upgrade.

The Landmark Award is not an annual award and is only given out for significant and challenging projects.

Previous winning projects include the Vancouver Convention Centre, where the awards ceremony took place this year on Oct. 17.

Graham Design Builders won the General Contractor over $40 million Gold Award for the Kelowna and Vernon Hospitals P3 Project.

Stuart Olson Dominion Construction Ltd. took home the Gold Award for their work on the Surrey Central Library in the General Contractor $15 million to $40 million category.

In the General Contractor up to $15 million category, Vancouver Pile Driving Ltd. won for the Ocean Concrete – Granville Island Planet Dock Replacement.

Trade contractors also shared the limelight.

Houle Electric Ltd. took Gold in the Electrical Contractor up to $2 million category for their work on the UPS and Distribution Equipment End of Life Maintenance.

The Electrical Contractor over $2 million award went to F&M Installations Ltd. for their work on the BC Hydro GMS Units 6-8 Capacity Increase Project.

The Mechanical Contractor up to $3 million Gold Award of Excellence was won by Dual Mechanical Ltd. for the Annacis Wastewater Centre.

PML Professional Mechanical Ltd. won Gold in the Mechanical Contractor over $3 million category for the Fort St. John Hospital.

The Chairman’s Trade Award was won by Keith Panel Systems Co. Ltd. for the VanDusen Botanical Garden Visitor Centre.

The President’s Trade Award went to Coastal Mountain Excavations Ltd. for the BC Hydro Bridge River Townsite Redevelopment.

Ledcor Construction Limited won the Gold Award for the VanDusen Botanical Garden Visitor Centre in the newly developed Sustainable Construction category.

The Manufacturer and Supplier award was won by Solid Rock Steel Fabricating Co. Ltd. for their high-altitude work on the Capilano Cliffwalk.

Scott Construction Group won the Heritage Restoration award for the Hotel Georgia.

The Innovation Gold Award went to Panther Constructors Ltd. for the BC Place Soccer Screens.

A number of non-project awards were also handed out at the gala.

Grant McMillan, president of the Council of Construction Associations (COCA), was presented with the Life Time Achievement Award.

“Grant McMillan’s dedication to the safety of our industry over the last two decades has been immeasurable,” said Sashaw.

“The awards committee recognized Grant’s significant contribution to construction in our province by awarding Grant McMillan the prestigious Life Time Achievement Award.”

The Construction Workplace Health and Safety award winner was Pacific Blasting and Demolition for their portable poly dust enclosure.

The inaugural U40 award was given to Heather Armitage of Active First Aid Inc.

The VRCA’s own Ron Coreau was named Educator of the Year and the Member of the Year was Scott Construction Group.

The Outstanding Woman in Construction Award went to Jackie Trach of PCL.

In most project categories, three Silver Award of Excellence winners were previously announced, with the winner announced at the gala.
