Countries look to Canada for P3 knowledge

This year marks the council’s 20th annual conference, with Canada now identified as a world leader in P3 expertise.

“P3s really began in the U.K. and Australia and then Canada started to look seriously at this approach to infrastructure development,” said Mark Romoff, president and CEO of the CCPPP.

“We then added the Canadian secret sauce to the recipe to develop best-in-class P3 programs.

Last year, both the U.K. and Australia undertook a critical review of their P3 programs and are looking to Canada to see what makes our approach so successful.

Canada is known for having a fair and transparent bidding process and predictable P3 deal flow. When a P3 project is announced here, it goes to the finish line.”

Romoff said interest in Canadian expertise is reflected in this year’s conference which has already signed up 1,200 delegates from across the globe, including delegations from the U.S., the U.K., Australia, New Zealand, Spain, Slovenia and Hungary.

The program will offer more than 20 panel sessions and 80 speakers.

Scheduled keynote speakers include a who’s who of P3 proponents including: federal Minister of Finance James Flaherty; Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty; Alberta Premier Alison Redford; National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations Shawn Atleo; and Michigan Governor Rick Snyder.

Romoff noted that the conference will also allow Canadian delegates to identify opportunities to export P3 expertise.

They can book sessions with trade commissioners from Canada’s Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade at the conference’s International Café.

Commissioners will offer local insight into P3 opportunities in various U.S. markets, the U.K., Croatia, Hungary, Southeast Asia and beyond.

“There are a number of Canadian companies who have the domestic expertise in P3s that will allow them to go global,” said Romoff.

The conference was held at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto on Nov. 26-27.
