The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) is investigating the second incident in 2013 in which BASE jumpers parachuted from the top of a 35-storey condominium tower under construction.

“The EPS discourages this high-risk activity, as it poses a significant risk to both the jumpers and the public,” said duty officer Chad Tawfik.

Police responded to the incident on Dec. 26, 2013, after witnesses reported two base jumpers in the area of 121 Street and Jasper Avenue at about 7 p.m.

One male jumper was arrested by on-site security and the other allegedly fled in a black SUV. Police charged a 34-year-old man with trespassing, which carries a $287 fine.

This is the second time base jumpers have leaped from the Pearl Tower construction site.

The EPS charged three individuals on Aug. 14, 2013 after similar jumps.

Officers were able to identify the individuals and charge them with the help of witness statements, photographs, surveillance camera footage and a Crime Stoppers tip.

In a similar set of circumstances, an investigation began at about 9:15 p.m. on Aug. 4, after police received a report from a security company of a suspected break and enter in progress at a highrise construction site.

Three unknown adults, with backpacks, allegedly scaled the fence at the site and jumped or parachuted from one of the top floors.

They landed a short distance away on the Victoria Promenade (100 Avenue) before escaping the scene in a dark SUV.

It took 19 minutes for them to climb 36 storeys, jump and make their escape.

BASE is an acronym that stands for the four categories of fixed objects, which are jumped from. These include building, antenna, span (bridge) and earth (cliff).
