Two people have been killed in a crash involving a car and an earth mover on Highway 63 in northern Alberta.

RCMP say the collision happened late night on March 11, about two kilometres north of a Fort McMurray-area industrial park.

Police said it appears that the car failed to stop for a red light, which was set up as part of a temporary traffic control system.

The driver of the car and a passenger in the vehicle died at the scene.

However, the operator of the earth mover was not hurt.

The names of the victims have not been released.

The highway was closed for a number of hours while police investigated.
