CanaData Conference an economic forecast

TORONTO

Celebrating its 21st year, the CanaData Conference looks to supply all attendees from the construction industry with enough information to last the year.

“The whole day is a forecast. The delegates can return to their office and have a forecast for their specific area of construction. It covers the different categories of construction,” said Alex Carrick, chief Canadian Economist, Reed Construction Data. Nine speakers will present on specific forecasts.

Ted Carmichael, chief Canadian Economist, J.P. Morgan Chase, opens the conference discussing the United States economy and how it affects Canada and the world.

Concerns about how commodity prices affect the construction industry are covered by Patricia Mohr, vice president, Economics, the Scotiabank Group.

“World commodity prices are influencing a lot in the economy right now. Oil and gas prices, political uncertainty in other countries in the Middle East and what the outlook is for it,” said Carrick.

The growing economies of China and India are having impacts on the prices of materials such as cement and steel.

“We’ve got to have some idea about what’s going to happen with construction prices, because it all ties back to construction,” commented Carrick. One concern raised at the Conference will be the increase in office construction within Canada.

“We haven’t had a lot of office construction for almost two decades. It will be interesting what Paul Morse, senior vice president, Cusman & Wakefield LePage has to say.”

Other key issues covered at the day-long event are the shift in demographics from the East to the West, the aging population on the construction trade, cross-border problems, Canada’s higher dollar, Vancouver/Whistler’s Olympic construction and the booming energy sector.

Keynote speaker for the event is Brian Tobin, former federal Cabinet Minister and Premier of Newfoundland.

The 21st annual CanaData Conference takes place on Thursday, Sept. 21 at the Liberty Grand Entertainment and Conference Centre.
