A Message from the V.P. and General Manager of Reed Construction Data, Canada

Welcome to the inaugural national issue of The Leaders.

For many years at our western publication, Journal of Commerce, we have been tracking the top General Contractors by dollar value. The data is compiled by our research team, tracking non-residential construction from conception to the start phase. On a daily basis, we make thousands of calls to owners, designers and general contractors – just to name a few of the many professionals we engage. From this vast array of intelligence, gathered over a 12-month period, we identify the leading General Contractors by dollar value.

This year, we decided to take our Leaders product to a national audience. The product has always been a highly anticipated annual insert into the Journal of Commerce. It is the subject of much discussion and debate. Quite frankly, we receive a substantial amount of feedback. It was not uncommon for readers and industry leaders to ask us about the possibility of a national edition.

As leaders in providing the information you need through the Journal of Commerce and Daily Commercial News, we are making progress with this valuable publication by making it national in scope.

What’s most apparent in this 2007 edition of Leaders is the work our production and editorial team has done to breathe new life into our design and content, modernizing it and giving it more of a magazine feel, distinguishing it from our newspapers.

The content has been honed to give you a national perspective while still maintaining regional focus. There is no other company in Canada that can compile a formidable combination of project data, construction editorial, analytics and statistics into one publication like Reed Construction Data has. We have been bringing you the news driving this industry since 1911, collecting project data since 1927 and compiling statistics and analytics for over 20 years. This is truly a unique opportunity for us, our readers and the industry.

Congratulations to EllisDon for ranking No. 1 in Canada for total construction by dollar value over 12 months according to our data. Leaders will no doubt spark discussion and debate when you consider that we will reach over 60,000 people in the Canadian construction industry through the print editions of the Journal of Commerce and Daily Commercial News, distribution at industry events and through our partners, and visitors to our websites.

So really, this update to Leaders is all about you. You spoke, we listened. We intend to continue to make Leaders the most sought-after, annual ranking of Canada’s most active General Contractors. We have big plans for this product. We are already looking forward to next year’s edition and have improvements in mind. We welcome your feedback; please let us know what you think.

I hope you enjoy reading the inaugural national edition of The Leaders. Then you need to get back to work. Who knows? Maybe you will be ranked next year.

Let the debate begin!

Mark Casaletto
