Natural gas line ruptured

A construction crew working on a pipeline just outside the gates of Jasper National Park ruptured the town’s major gas line and knocked out the local power plant on Jan. 23.

About 4,700 residents of Jasper, Alberta were left without heat or light for several hours, when the town’s main gas line was punctured by a construction crew.

The rupture forced the town to use backup systems, which led to rotating power outages throughout the municipality.

Natural gas crews worked to get the heat back on for residents and the gas line was repaired by evening.

Early the next morning, crews went door-to-door reigniting pilot lights on furnaces and appliances.

Priority was given to getting the heat back on for the local hospital and public buildings.
