Improvements underway at Saskatchewan Legislative Building

The Saskatchewan government announced on March 31 that work is underway on the preservation and rehabilitation of the exterior of the Saskatchewan Legislative Building.

The building and grounds are recognized as a national historic site, a provincial heritage property and are protected under Saskatchewan’s Heritage Property Act.

Initially, an area is being rehabilitated to determine the best methods for preservation and to confirm the extent of repairs required to the building’s exterior walls.

The masonry work focuses on repairing cracked, broken or displaced stone work, repointing of mortar joints and cleaning the stone work.

The work will also address water management and drainage deficiencies and selective structural upgrades to the parapets and roof abutments. A strategy for upgrading the windows will also be developed during the course of the project. The work continues conservation efforts that began with foundation upgrades in 1998. It is expected that the restoration of the entire envelope of the building will be completed over the next several years.

PCL is the general contractor. Pow City Mechanical, K West Electric Ltd., Tower Scaffold Services, RJW Stonemasons and Heather & Little Ltd. are the subtrades.
