Truck driver dies in Deerfoot Trail crash

A man died earlier this month when the gravel truck he was operating rolled over on Deerfoot Trail just before the 16th Avenue turnoff in Calgary.

Police said a dump truck was in the southbound curb lane when it appears the driver lost control. The truck crossed the other lanes and struck the centre median, causing the vehicle to roll and come to rest on the passenger side in the northbound median lane.

When Calgary firefighters arrived on scene, the truck was found on its side leaking smoke and diesel fuel. Firefighters extricated the man in minutes, by cutting through the roof with and hydraulic cutters. Hose lines were also pulled off the pump truck to protect against the possibility of the fuel igniting.

Paramedics pronounced the 28-year-old man dead at the scene.
