Town of Markham proposes new LEED-compliant Cathedral Town firehall

Although a final decision will not be made until fall 2008, designs are being drafted to determine whether the Town of Markham should seek LEED Gold Certification for its planned Cathedral Town Fire Station.

If the town chooses to obtain LEED certification on this project, all future Markham fire stations will be LEED buildings.

Thomas Brown Architects has completed the working drawings for the 10,000-square-foot Cathedral station — located at Major Mackenzie Drive and Woodbine Avenue in Markham — but is in the process of revising them for LEED consideration.

Without the added costs of obtaining LEED certification, the town estimates construction of the one-storey station will cost $2,750,000 or $275-$280 per square foot.

Stephenson Engineering Ltd. and Cobalt Engineering Ltd. completed the engineering designs for the station. The Town of Markham expects to tender this project in late 2008 or early 2009.
