REC Silicon plans $1.2-billion manufacturing plant in Quebec

REC Silicon, a division of the Norwegian multinational group Renewable Energy Corporation, has announced its intention to invest more than $1.2 billion to build a manufacturing plant in Bécancour.

In 2012, the facility will begin producing polysilicon, the main material used for production of solar panels and semiconductors.

Quebec premier Jean Charest confirmed the news and described the project as one of the biggest industrial investments made in the province by a foreign firm.

The owner plans to build the plant at the Bécancour industrial and harbor park. Construction will be scheduled in phases and is anticipated to begin in 2010.
