Kayaker finds body of missing Langley construction worker
Part of the mystery behind the disappearance of a 29-year-old construction worker was solved when a kayaker found a body in a lake near Mission, B.C.
John Kahler disappeared from the mud flats of Stave Lake last November.
The Langley resident went missing while camping.
He was out with about 300 outdoor enthusiasts from across the Lower Mainland who had gathered for a weekend party.
Kahler, who was not an experienced outdoorsman and possessed little camping and outdoor skills, went to the area with two friends.
He and his friends went up in separate vehicles and he did not know anyone else in the group.
His pickup truck, a white Ford F150, was found by one of his friends stuck in a ditch about 200 metres from the camp.
The truck was found in a sinkhole with the engine still running, its wipers on and music playing.
Kahler’s other friend pulled the truck out and drove it around later that day.
He looked for his friend, but couldn’t find him.
It was much later in the day when the RCMP were notified about his disappearance and performed a brief search.
Kahler’s friends and family started panicking the next morning when Kahler didn’t show up for work in Whistler, where he was involved in the construction of ski jumps for the 2010 Olympics.
Search and rescue crews and police formally began their search. A police boat, K9 unit, helicopter and about 70 search and rescue volunteers scoured the area, but didn’t turn up any signs of the missing man.
Mission RCMP notified the Kahler family on Oct. 21 that the body found by a kayaker on Oct. 18 is the Langley man.
An autopsy has been scheduled for the week of Oct. 27.
