Snowplows keep Manitoba’s ice roads open

Manitoba’s network of winter ice roads opened on time this year. As the ground hardened, heavy graders and snowplows scrape away excess snow, as well as keep the roadway covered with enough snow to remain reflective. This ensures that heat from the sun is not absorbed and the road remains frozen.

At another stage, holes are drilled into the ice with a sleigh auger, which then acts as a pump to flood the area with water (see photo below). It quickly freezes, making the ice even thicker. Once the ice is thick enough to support big trucks, the equipment is removed.
