Study recommends new arch bridge construction in St. Catharines, Ontario

The Regional Municipality of Niagara, Ontario Wednesday shared design drawings on the environmental assessment of the construction project to replace the 96-year-old Burgoyne Bridge in central St. Catharines.

The project is anticipated to cost about $55 million with construction expected to begin in 2014-15.

An environmental assessment study, carried out by Delcan, recommends that the new bridge be built as close as possible to the existing alignment.

The third and final public information centre on the project was held Wednesday night, September 14 at Ridley College in St. Catharines.

Following comments from stakeholders on the design and alignment, the Environmental Study Report will be filed with the Ministry of Environment followed by a 30-day review period. Based on the outcome from the review period a recommendation will be made to the regional council to begin the detailed design phase of the project. The regional municipality encompasses 12 municipalities, including Niagara Falls and Welland and St. Catharines.

Burgoyne Bridge was built in 1915 and carries traffic on St. Paul Street, also known as Regional Road 81, over Twelve Mile Creek and Highway 406.

An inspection performed in 2010 by Hatch Mott MacDonald involved an evaluation, which concluded that the existing structure had five to seven years of useful life remaining before major rehabilitation or replacement work would be required.

The replacement bridge recommended is about 317 metres long, with a 110-metre long arch spanning the valley. This arch is both an aesthetic feature and a critical structural element that allows the bridge to be built without the need for a permanent pier that would otherwise have to be placed between Highway 406 and the Twelve Mile Creek.
