Pipeline company gives peas a chance

An energy company has decided to delay construction of a portion of pipeline through a community garden near Edmonton so growers can harvest their vegetables.

A spokeswoman for Plains Midstream Canada said that work on the oil pipe has been pushed back to the beginning of October.

About 70 people gathered recently at the garden just north of the city to ward off bulldozers set to rumble through the area.

The province has leased 2 1/2 hectares of the land to the gardeners for nearly 20 years.

Some of the produce goes to the Edmonton Food Bank.

Sharon Lopatka with Alberta Infrastructure said the pipeline construction would have affected about a third of the garden.

She said that the work should be complete by early next year so the entire garden can be planted again in the spring.
