Journal of Commerce update for the week of September 10th, 2012

In this week's update, we look at some of the stories we'll be covering in the Journal of Commerce for the week of September 10th, 2012.

A war of words has erupted between organized labour in British Columbia and the Independent Contractors and Businesses Association. Tom Sigurdson of the B.C. Building Trades has called a recent ICBA campaign “disingenuous” for claiming the NDP will get rid of secret ballots for union membership, should they take power at the provincial level in British Columbia.

A huge thermal coal mine has been proposed for construction near Hinton, Alberta. Australia-based Coalspur Mines wants to build in three phases, with the first phase costing $879 million and covering 10,000 hectares.

The Southern Alberta Institute of Technology is opening a $400 million trades training facility in Calgary. The project took more than two years to build and will house the school of construction as well as schools for manufacturing, automation and energy.

Stephen Bauld has a column in this week's paper about defining construction, and make sure to check out our latest feature video about a new vertical greenhouse being built on the top level of a parking lot in downtown Vancouver.
