British Columbia Construction Safety Alliance executive director Mike McKenna recently stopped by the Journal of Commerce to offer his insights on several safety issues affecting the construction industry.
McKenna addressed the changes to WorkSafeBC's Experience Rating System. The system is currently capped at a 33.3 per cent surcharge for negative safety records and a 33.3 per cent rebate for positive safety records. In 2013, the experience rating system for construction will rise, eventually reaching the 100 per cent surcharge and 50 percent discount mark for premiums by 2016.
McKenna also addressed the use of mechanical solutions in lieu of flaggers for traffic control. He pointed out that flaggers should be the choice of last resort to slow down speed traffic, but more often are used as a “first resort,” and that alternatives should be studied in order to increase the safety of not only flaggers but all workers at a job site on a busy road.
