VIDEO: JJM Construction's Dee Miller speaks to the VRCA U40
Dee Miller, a vice president at Delta, B.C. based JJM Construction and former chair of the Canadian Construction Association, recently took time out of her busy schedule to speak to the Vancouver Regional Construction Association's U40 mentoring breakfast.
The breakfasts allow construction veterans to impart knowledge and advice to the next generation of industry leaders, and Miller was able to point out several emerging trends that will soon affect the industry.
Miller singled out the demographic shifts affecting the industry as the baby boomers begin to retire, as well as the growing trend of foreign competition becoming a factor in the pursuit of Canadian construction projects.
She also addressed the changing and increasingly important role of technology in the construction industry. While the old guard sometimes regards gadgets like smartphones as a distraction, she said, it’s up to the industry to embrace technology rather than fight it.
Miller wrapped up by illustrating the opportunities on the way for the industry, as Canada outpaces Japan and rivals China and India for construction activity. Though a lot of the projects will be in rural settings, Miller said, there will be ample construction work at every level for the next generation.
