Tunnel Vision

The Massey Tunnel under the Fraser River in Metro Vancouver may be replaced.

British Columbia premier Christy Clark announced on Sept. 28 at the annual meeting of the Union of British Columbia Municipalities that the provincial government will immediately begin planning and project development to replace the tunnel.

Originally built in 1958, it was the first project in North America to use immersed tube technology.

The tunnel currently carries more than 80,000 people a day and is now a focal point for congestion.

During the same address, Clark also announced $650 million will be committed over a 10 year period to continue four-lane improvements to the Trans-Canada Highway from Kamloops to the Alberta border.
